Barricaded in the brother-zone

Though we’re riding the crest of the ‘Why should boys have all the fun?’ generation of girls, there is a huge section of them who consider the tying of the rakhi on Raksha Bandhan, a sacred tradition. “Usually the brother calls the sister home. That’s how the tradition goes. Then we take arti for our brothers and apply tilak on his forehead. We give him sweets and tie the rakhi on his wrist. The rakhi signifies that the brother will protect his sister from all evils,” explains Kajal.

But the ‘bond of brotherhood’ trip is something that women have also been using defuse the attention of unwelcome suitors.

“Some of us tie rakhis because we genuinely think of the boy as our brother. But some of us do it to keep the boys out of our hair. It is hilarious to see them run,” grins Shilpa, a college graduate.  Says Vasu, “I remember how my cousins used to hide from girls during Raksha Bandhan. It used to be so hilarious!” If the hide-and-seek did not work, boys came up with crazy reasons to avoid the rakhi.

“I remember a friend who once had a cast on both his wrists to prevent girls from tying the rakhi. Another one used to say it was against his religious principles to take a rakhi!” she adds.
