THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The festival flag went up for the annual Beemapally Uroos at the Beemapally Mosque on Monday in the presence of hundreds of faithful. Jama-at president M M A Khader hoisted the flag for the ten-day fest by 11 am. Earlier, a procession was taken out after the traditional ‘Duaa’ prayers. Beemapally Imam Abdul Khader Anwari led the prayers, which began at 8 am. Special prayers, lectures and discourses will mark the ten days of the festival, which will come to a close on May 3. The Uroos, one of the important events in the capital city’s religious calendar, is held annually to commemorate Syedunnisa Beema Beevi who, along with her son Syyidushaheed Maheen Aboobaker, are interred at the mosque. A member of the Prophet’s family, Beema Beevi is believed to have arrived here from Mecca. She is also believed to have been a woman with extraordinary spiritual powers.
