Compensation of Rs 1 crore to victims’ families, proper civic maintenance and moving coaching centres to a more spacious area in the national capital: these were the demands put forth by a delegation of protesting UPSC aspirants when they met the lieutenant governor on Wednesday.
Later in the night, DCP (central Delhi) M Harshavardhan spoke to the students assuring them that the authorities were looking into their demands. “Your demands have got the attention of the highest offices in the country. Believe in the system that you want to be a part of,” Harshavardhan told students sitting on a protest over the past 72 hours.
The tragic death of three IAS aspirants – Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana and Nevin Delvin from Kerala – in the flooded basement of a coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar, sparked widespread protests. Students have since called for action against the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for failing to maintain storm water drains, which led to flooding after heavy rains on the evening of July 27.
A student from the delegation told CNN-News18 that the L-G has agreed with the demands and asked for 15 days to three weeks’ time. The DCP reiterated this and gave updates to the protesters about the police investigation and a notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
The assurances by the L-G and the senior cop, however, seems to have divided protesting students into two factions – one that wants to call off the protest as the authorities have heard them out and the other that does not believe in the system. Now, it remains to be seen if protesters find a way to stay united.
