KOCHI: Deviating from the usual method of trapping job aspirants by offering employment in the Gulf countries, a job racket has launched operations in the city by taking huge amount of money from people after promising them jobs in Indonesia, Malaysia and Mauritius.Over 30 people from Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts have been duped so far by those operating the job racket. It is allegedly run by Ruth Mary of Vennala, V S Haneef Rauthur of Ernakulam South and Leena of Kadavanthra.A complaint lodged by the victims with the Kochi City Police Commissioner says that the accused had collected Rs 50,000 and passports from them after promising jobs in Mauritius and Indonesia. The police had filed a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the incident and an investigation was on to trace the activities of the racket. "People have become more aware of the job rackets which dupe them after promising jobs in the Gulf. But now there is a shift in their modus operandi. People should be aware of the activities of these fraudsters and crosscheck with the government officials about the authenticity of the recruitment agency before parting with their money," a senior police official said. He said that the rackets were using women to convince people. In the complaint, the victims alleged that it was a woman who briefed them about the job opportunities in Mauritius and Indonesia and they handed over the money and the passport to the other accused as directed by her. "For the last seven months we have been waiting for the offer. But when they started giving us excuses we demanded our money back," the complaint said.
