THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 31 ‘shlokas’ of the ‘Bhajagovindam’ authored by Sankaracharya will be presented in full on Sankara Jayanthi on Thursday in the city. It will be for the first time since the 1960s that all the 31 shlokas would be presented in full in the traditional ragas, the Brehath Sangeeth Kendram, which is organising the performance, said. ‘’In the 1960s, Palakkad Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar arranged the shlokas in traditional ragas and recited them before the Kanchi Kamakoti Math head during his visit to Thiruvananthapuram. No one has presented the 31 verses together since then,’’ Brehath Sangeeth Kendram secretary Rejani P J said. The recital will be held at the Abhedasramam, East Fort, at 6.30 pm on Thursday. Dr B Pushpa, professor and head, Department of Music, Kerala University, will lead an 18-member troupe at the recital. Bhajagovindam begins with the four-line ‘Bhajagovindam Bhajagovindam/Govindam Bhaja moodamathe/ Samprapthe sannihithe kaale/Nahi nahi rakshathi dukryanjkarane.’ The Brehath Sangeetha Kendram is planning to celebrate Adi Sankara Jayanthi in a big way this year as the celebrations are now being confined to the four Maths and to a number of literary gatherings, according to a statement.
