Bhopal: The Income Tax Department has attached properties worth Rs 10 crore belonging to BJP leader and former deputy chairman of Housing Federation Sushil Vasvani in connection with a disproportionate assets case.
Sources in the I-T department said the action was initiated under the Benami properties provisions.
Vasvani, a bus conductor-turned-politician, climbed the political ranks after his association with the RSS and later the BJP.
After receiving complaints of black money being turned into white money at a Bairagarh co-operative bank headed by Vasvani as founder chairman, the CBI had raided the bank. Soon after, Vasvani’s properties came under the scanner and were included in the probe.
During the course of the probe, the I-T Department had seized properties belonging to Vasvani, including a mall in Bairagath area, sources said.
Vasvani reportedly invested heavily in the mall but showed the capital influx via a couple of companies that had no idea about the venture.
The Vasvani family has allegedly invested in properties in Laalghati, Bairagarh and MP Nagar and is said to have big supply contracts in the Bhopal Municipal Corporation.
Congress state spokesperson Manak Agrawal has alleged that Vasvani helped the RSS and the BJP office bearers in converting their black money after demonetisation.
BJP spokesperson Rahul Kothari had said that the state unit chief, it a serious issue claiming that party state head, Nandkumar Singh Chauhan, would take cognizance of the matter.
There was no official statement from the I-T department.
