BANGALORE: Former CM B S Yeddyurappa might have set himself a deadline of January 15 to come back to power, but the elections to the five state Assemblies and the prevailing anti-corruption mood in the country triggered by social activist Anna Hazare might stretch his wait too far. According to sources in the BJP, the party high command is not interested in fulfilling any of Yeddyurappa’s demands till he gets himself cleared of all corruption charges against him. Even if, for the argument sake, one considers that the party decides to meet his demands, it will not be before the completion of Assembly elections to five states for which the calendar of events has already been announced by the Election Commission of India.Firstly, the party leadership will be too busy in election works to spend time on the Yeddyurappa issue. Secondly, the party will be more worried about its image during the election than any individual’s ambition. The BJP national leadership is striving hard to turn the anti-corruption wave in the country to its advantage. The party is all set to make corruption its main plank in the Assembly elections. In such a situation, conceding to Yeddyurappa’s demands will be the last thing on the minds of party leadership.” sources added. The BJP has been vehemently supporting Anna Hazare in his crusade against corruption and had waged a war against the UPA government at the Centre on CWG, 2G spectrum and other scams keeping 2014 general election in mind. Such being the situation, elevating a tainted person will not only put a question mark on BJP’s credibility to fight graft but also derails party’s plan to stage a come back at the Centre.Giving power to Yeddyurappa is like giving ammunition to Congress which has been decimated by the BJP on corruption issue. The Congress is waiting for an opportunity to fight back, says a senior minister in the Gowda Cabinet. This apart, BJP senior leader L K Advani, whose relations with Yeddyurappa have soured like never before, is said to be firm on continuing CM Sadanand Gowda till the end of the tenure of this Assembly. The boycott of Yeddyurappa supporters to Advani’s rally at Bangalore has angered the party patriarch. Convincing Advani will be a challenge for Yeddyurappa, a senior party functionary said.Ever since he is out from jail, Yeddyurappa is trying to get back to power. After his recent trip to Delhi failed to yield any result, he has become more aggressive. In Karnataka I meant BJP. The concept of collective leadership is not acceptable to me, he had said recently which triggered a war of words between him and state BJP president K S Eshwarappa.
