(Sao Paulo), Brazil: A Brazilian man kidnapped his daughter, stole a small private plane and after being pursued by the authorities crashed it into a shopping mall in Goiania city, Bandeirantes television reported.
Both the man and his five-year-old daughter died in the incident, the network said Thursday. Evidently, nobody on the ground was injured.
The man, whose identity has not been announced by authorities, abducted his daughter in Luziania, a town in Goias state, and afterwards stole the single-engine plane from the local airport.
The plane was pursued by a police helicopter and, after performing several dangerous manoeuvres, it crashed into the parking garage at the Flamboyant shopping mall.
Before stealing the plane, the man threw the girl's mother out of the vehicle in which she was riding, injuring her severely. She was taken to a hospital in Brasilia.
The Brazilian air force, which has a major base in Goiania, ordered military aircraft to overfly the city to support the police helicopter that began pursuing the plane, Bandeirantes reported.
According to the network, firefighters extinguished the blaze caused by the crash and prevented the spread of the flames that destroyed a score of vehicles that were parked at the mall, where some 5,000 people were shopping and working.
Authorities have not yet determined the reasons why the man kidnapped his daughter.
