Jaisalmer: In a first, the Border Security Force has deployed "sand scooters", that run smoothly on sand dunes, to step up vigil in the Jaisalmer and Barmer sector along the International Border, the border guarding agency said on Tuesday.
Two such scooters have been deployed along the border for vigilance and to contain intrusion, if any, BSF Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Rajasthan Frontier, Ravi Gandhi said.
These scooters would be very useful during night also for strict vigilance as its long beam of light will enable jawans to keep a keen watch on the borders, DIG Gandhi said.
BSF has been using camel back for vigilance along the sandy terrain of western Rajasthan, and during the night it was difficult to go out in the darkness on camel back, he said.
However, the DIG clarified that the force has no plan to avoid camel ride for border vigilance purpose.
Talking about the newly inducted patrolling vehicles, the DIG said at least four jawans would be able to sit and ride on one scooter along with their defence gadgets.
After testing their performance on the harsh terrain, more such scooters could be bought if required, he added.
