Burkini liberation and Shilpa Shetty
Burkini liberation and Shilpa Shetty
Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsI don't know the religion of the model for Aheda Zanetti's burkini that has already been picked up by more than 9000 people in Australia. From the slides that are available on the net she looks great in Zanetti's invention. One can only guess about the religion of those who have picked these Burkinis meant for Muslim women who can not wear a bikini when they want to go for a swim. The road to integrate Muslim women with the Australian society perhaps passes through the beautiful beaches.
The Burkini, again as per Aheda, is better suited for protecting the body from the sun and is also meant for those who want to show some modesty on the beach. Reason enough for me to think why non Muslims can also try this bikini alternative. But the way this Burkini story is being told one gets a feeling that it has more to do with liberation than integration. And how does one liberate those for whom the bikini is not just a swim wear. And it is this class that needs liberation.
The timing of the Burkini invention has some how coincided with Shilpa Shetty's tears on the British reality show Celebrity Big Brother. Shilpa, I'm sure won't have any problems with the bikini but for her Big Brother house mates her status did not stop the racial slurs. No one stops film actresses from wearing Bikinis in India after all. So who needs liberation? Gordon Brown, the British Chancellor of the Exchequer says he wants Britain to be seen as a country of fairness and tolerance. The reality show, however, has shown the reality.
Dogs and Indians were not allowed on the Mall Road in Shimla during the British rule. Only those ferrying the British 'memsahibs' in the hand pulled rickshaws were allowed. This was the mindset and the reality show has showed not much has changed.
There is a message here for all those Indian brains who feel enough opportunities are not available at home to let their talent blossom to the hilt. You will be allowed only if you fall into the rickshaw pulling category. Otherwise you are the problem. To choose between a life of dignity and that accompanied by racial epithets is matter of personal choice though.
Again this is not to suggest that everything is good in India. Engineers fighting against corruption do get murdered. That is also a reality. But some one asking a celebrity of some consequence from anywhere in the world to pick chicken bones from the lavatory with his or her teeth is unimaginable here.
Shilpa Shetty is an actress of little consequence. And now that she has said that she did not feel that the behaviour at Big Brother was racist, she can at best be called dumb.
A bit of an imagination in the end. Wonder what Sushmita Sen or Preity Zinta would have done had the same slurs been hurled at them. Both of them wear bikinis and know how to carry themselves. It's not about Burkini or Bikini but the way you carry yourself in any of these.
