New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has cleared New Delhi's bid to host the 2014 Asian Games on Thursday.
"Government through the Prime Minister had sent its committement to the Olympic Council of Asia for its firm and determined effort to host these Games," Priyaranjan Dasmunshi, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, said after the Cabinet meeting.
"The Cabinet further appealed to Asian countries to support our bid to host the best possible Asian Games so far," he added.
The 2014 Asiad will be the 17th edition of the event. The inaugural event was in fact held in the Capital in 1951. South Korea's Incheon city is its main rival. The decision to hand over the 17th edition will be taken on April 16-17 in Kuwait.
South Korea last hosted the Games in 2002 in Busan. The last edition of the Asiad was held in Doha, Qatar.
