CHENNAI: The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has indicted urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu, including the Chennai Corporation, for Rs. 3.14 crore loss in revenue due to various factors, including wrong assessment of property tax.In its report for the period till March 31, 2010, which was tabled in the State Assembly on Saturday, the CAG said failure to include additional rooms constructed by the Lemon Tree hotel here for property tax assessment and adoption of a flat tariff for calculation of property tax by Chennai Corporation resulted in short collection by Rs. 1.37 crore.Similarly, the failure of Devakottai municipality to adopt correct rate of property tax resulted in loss of revenue of Rs 60.74 lakh. The award of lease for bus entry fee collection by Tiruvannamalai Municipality without assessing the number of buses entering the bus stand resulted in a revenue loss of Rs. 55.21 lakh. The Kancheepuram Municipality failed to renew the bank guarantee provided by a contractor towards mobilisation advance. It resulted in a loss of Rs. 33.82 lakh. Also, Mannachanallur Town Panchayat failed to collect water meter maintenance charges for domestic water supply. It resulted in a revenue loss of Rs. 16.04 lakh.The Tirunelveli corporation failed to implement the amended by-law for underground drainage scheme, which led to non-realisation of Rs. 10.79 lakh revenue towards monthly charges.
