CHENNAI: The Indian Heritage Hotels Association is all set to join a long list of organisations pressing for the conservation of heritage structures and zones in Tamil Nadu. The call for a government boost to heritage conservation efforts is expected to be made by a delegation of the influential Indian Heritage Hotels Association. It will held soon after its executive committee meeting on February 28. This would also be the first time the meeting is held in Tamil Nadu. While it is usually held at heritage hotels in or around Rajasthan and Delhi, and a few instances in Kerala, the meeting is now set to take place at the INDeco Hotel in Swamimalai, which is located across a village built in the late 1800s.The IHHA’s members comprise each and every property categorised as a heritage hotel by the Government of India, and presents a veritable list of erstwhile royalty in the country. The February 28 meeting of its executive committee will be chaired by its current president Gaj Singh II, head of the erstwhile royal family of Jodhpur-Marwar. A delegation comprising Gaj Singh II, Randhir Vikram Singh of the erstwhile royal family of Mandawa and Steve Borgia, IHHA executive member would visit heritage areas in Chettinad, Tanjore and Yercaud. They are then expected to seek audience with Chief Minister J Jayalaliithaa, to present three pleas. The delegation would urge the CM to take steps to have Fort St George and Chettinad nominated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They would offer IHHA’s technical support and assistance for the restoration of the Kalas Mahal section of the Chepauk Palace, which was gutted in a recent fire. Further, the IHHA delegation would also urge the Chief Minister to make concessions and benefits that could give a boost to the heritage tourism sector in Tamil Nadu.
