Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced a five-fold hike in the cash component of the award being given to the untouchability-free villages selected from 31 districts, except Chennai, in the State. Hereafter, the prize amount would go up from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
The State government has set a seven-point criteria for getting the award. The people of the award-winning village should follow the principle that untouchability was eradicated at their village.
The selected village should ensure that temples, public well, shops, hotels, lakes, saloons were used by all sections of people irrespective of caste and creed and there should be no curb on the general public taking water from private wells.
Besides, members of other communities should have rented their houses for members of Adi Dravida and Tribal communities, besides ‘Jamabandhis’ (feast in which people from all communities participate) should be observed during festivals. For several years, the people at the village should have lived in peace and harmony.
The cash award would be used for carrying out developmental activities like drinking water facilities, road-laying works, repairing the school buildings, construction of day care centres for children and students and providing proper lighting facilities in the neighbourhood.
