Monday evening was special. One of the versatile actors of Bollywood, Paresh Rawal, descended in Chennai to entertain the audience with his hit comedy drama – Krishan Vs Kanhaiya. As the name suggests, it was a tussle between an atheist and antique dealer, Krishan Lal Mehta, with Kanhaiya or Lord Krishna. The atheist files a case against God after his shop is the only one destroyed in an earthquake, and subsequently, the insurance company refuses to settle his claim stating that this ‘act of god’ is not covered under the terms of the contract. What follows then is a complete laugh riot with Paresh Rawal leading the play with his now famous punch lines at every opportune moment. The actor’s scenes with his God-fearing wife were the most hilarious, as his innocent spouse fails to read between the lines and mixed up things. The one-liners were sometimes so funny that one missed a seat belt, as one hilarious take after another kept rolling before the eyes. Paresh Rawal was at his best as the atheist. He shifted elegantly from one mood to another, without too much of an effort. Despite loud laughs frm the audience, coupled with some shrill cries of children around, Paresh didn’t lose focus and portrayed his character an almost flawlessly. The supporting cast was equally impressive. The best came from the actor who came dressed in suits as Lord Krishna or Kanhaiya and mouthed English short forms as the new modern God. “Dude, I’m the one who you’ve filed a case against,” he told the atheist Krishan. “I’m the one who lifted the Govardhan mountain with my little finger,” he added. To which Krishan replied, “You had lifted the mountain with one finger, but you use two hands to play a flute.” Punch lines like this one flowed aplenty in the play, which kept the audience in splits. But the play had its fair share of messages that made one think. It raised   a question on whether all the rituals being followed or the money spent in the name of devotion are worth it. At the end, when everything seems to be going in favour of Krishan, the character dies, only to be used as an advantage by the worshippers of God. Krishan becomes the new God of the people. Then, the famous words said by the character who played Kanhaiya come to the forefront: “If you go against religion, people will make you their religion.” And then, the battle between Krishan and Kanhaiya continues. The play was held at the Music Academy and was organised by Ladnun Nagrik Parishad.
