London: China have once again showed their supremacy, leading the medals tally after two days of the London Olympics 2012.
By Sunday, China opened up a lead by snatching up six gold medals to the United States and Italy's combined five. The US increased their medals' count to eleven on Sunday, winning most of the swimming events. Eight of their medals have come from this event so far, including two of their three gold. The other came from shooting. They added a silver in the men's 400 free relay, a gold in the women's 100 butterfly, a bronze in the women's 400m free relay and a silver in the women's 400m free on Sunday.
China, however, lead the way in the gold medal department, gathering six through two full days of competition. They have excelled in shooting and swimming, with four medals coming from each - and two gold from each, as well. They also have a gold and silver in weightlifting, a gold in diving and a silver in shooting.
Defending champion Guo Wenjun retained her women's 10-meter air pistol title, while Lu Ying won the women's 100m butterfly silver in 56.87 seconds. American Dana Vollmer claimed the title with 55.98 seconds, eclipsing the previous world mark of 56.06. Their women's archery team took silver after narrowly missing out to South Korea and Wu Jingbiao finished second, after leading the men's 56 kilogram weight lifting competition.
Wei Ning added another medal for China by taking a silver in the women's skeet shooting with 91 points. The gold went to Kimberly Rhode of the United States, who has become the first American to win an individual medal in five consecutive Olympics.
Italy had two gold, three silver and two bronze that took them to third in the tally. They dominated fencing, picking up four medals in the event.
