Chronology of the BMW hit-and run case

New Delhi: On Jan 10, 1999, Sanjeev Nanda, son of arms dealer Suresh Nanda and grandson of former navy chief S.M. Nanda, mowed down six people under his BMW. More than nine years later, he was on Tuesday declared guilty of the crime by a Delhi court.

From Jan 10, 1999 to Sep 2, 2008, the many twists and turns in the much publicised case:

Jan 10, 1999: Sanjeev Nanda, who was driving a BMW, allegedly ran over six people, including three policemen, in south Delhi's Lodhi Colony area.

Jan 11, 1999: Sanjeev Nanda and his friends Siddharth Gupta and Manik Kapoor arrested.

Jan 13, 1999: Court grants bail to Siddharth Gupta and Manik Kapoor while extending judicial custody for Sanjeev Nanda.

Jan 14, 1999: Sunil Kulkarni, key witness in the case, appeared before the police and recorded his statement.

Jan 15, 1999: Delhi Police appoints I.U. Khan as special public prosecutor.

April 5, 1999: High court rejects Sanjeev Nanda's bail plea.

April 8, 1999: Delhi Police formally charges all the accused -- Sanjeev Nanda, Manik Kapoor, Siddharth Gupta, (his father) businessman Rajiv Gupta and his domestic helps Bhola Nath and Sham Singh.

July 1999: High court orders compensation to the families of the victims who died in the accident.

Aug 3, 1999: Charges framed against all accused by the court.

Aug 1999: High court acquits Siddharth Gupta.

Sep 1999: Three witnesses in the case retract their statement.

Oct 4, 1999: Sanjeev Nanda gets bail from the high court.

2000: Prosecution drops Sunil Kulkarni as witness.

May 14, 2007: Sunil Kulkarni deposes before the city court and records statement.

May 17, 2007: Kulkarni identifies Sanjeev Nanda in court and claims he saw him driving the car on the fateful night.

July 2, 2008: Prosecution begins final arguments in the case.

July 14, 2008: Prosecution concludes final arguments.

July 18, 2008: Defence begins final arguments.

Aug 20, 2008: Defence concludes final arguments.

Aug 26, 2008: Court reserves order.

Aug 29, 2008: Defence submits oral submissions and cites law commission report.

Sep 2, 2008: Sanjeev Nanda held guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
