The indoor stadium hitherto maintained by the Thendral Manamagizh Mandram, which had been taken over by the Corporation recently, witnessed a clash between the members of AIADMK and Congress on Tuesday night following a Vellore court order that had stayed the Corporation’s move.
Built on 16,000 sq feet, the stadium had received the State government funding under the MLA development fund to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore. When Sathuvachari was added to the Vellore Corporation limits, Mayor P Karthiyayini had visited the facility and had directed the Corporation officials to serve a notice to the Mandram on June 5 to vacate the premises.
The then Vellore Corporation Commissioner M Seeni Ajmal Khan had passed an order to take over the stadium by the Corporation on July 30. Following this, the Mandram approached the Vellore district court against the civic body’s move to take over the property.
On Tuesday , former MLA C Gnanasekaran, along with his Congress party members, arrived at the facility and claimed that the Mandram would hereafter run the stadium.
He showed the court order that passed on September 5, which had stayed the order of the Corporation to take over the property until the case was disposed of. Tuesday night also witnessed a scuffle between the AIADMK and Congress cadre, which led to a few damaged furniture and a plaque.
Sathuvachari Zonal Officer Kannan lodged a complaint with the Sathuvachari police against C Gnanasekaran, while the Manram, in turn, lodged a complaint to take action on AIADMK cadre who allegedly broke the furniture at the stadium.
On Wednesday, Corporation locked the facility with a message ‘Stadium is closed due to maintenance work.
