VELLORE: Now that the order rejecting the clemency petition filed by Sriharan alias Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan alias Arivu, the three assassins of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi has been handed over to the trio officially, it is still fluid whether they can escape gallows. While the trio could opt for a swift legal remedy to apply the brakes, one has to wait and see whether public outcry against death execution that is also catching up in a big way, could supplement their efforts.Even though the probable date of execution has not yet been announced, prison sources said the norm was to hang condemned prisoners within seven days of the notification, which commenced  on Friday. Their lawyers have been expressing hope that they  could still approach the Supreme Court to either stay the execution or at least reduce the punishment to life-term. Political leaders who met them in the prison have been pitching strong on the need for the intervention of the State and the central governments under article 72 and 161 of the constitution to stay the execution. The State, however, has not responded to this plea.
