KOCHI: The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court on Friday came down heavily on the CBI for the delay in the investigation into the custodial death of Sampath, the prime accused in the Puthoor Sheela murder case.
Principal Sessions Judge B Kemal Pasha criticised the CBI while considering the bail application of P V Ramesh, former SI of Palakkad Town police station, who is an accused in the case. "The murder of Sheela was a gruesome incident. But the custodial death of Sampath, who was involved in the murder cannot be justified. But the CBI is showing partiality to the accused in the Sampath murder. While some accused were arrested, some were excluded. The custodial death of Sampath was not a planned crime. It is not known whether the policemen conspired to commit the crime. Yet the CBI is dragging its feet in the investigation," the court said.

The CBI's submission that the investigation was in progress was not a sufficient reason to keep the petitioner in custody. The court also rejected the argument that granting bail would affect the investigation and the accused are likely to influence the investigating officers.

The CBI had earlier returned the arrest warrants issued against DIG Vijay Sakhare and ADGP Mohammed Yasin, who had been accused in the case.
