Luke Doerner has scored a hat trick as reigning champion Australia thrashed Scotland 9-0.

New Delhi: Luke Doerner has scored a hat trick as reigning champion Australia opened its Commonwealth Games competition with a convincing 9-0 win over Scotland.

The 31-year-old Doerner neatly converted short corners on either side of half time on Wednesday to provide the three-time gold medalists with a perfect start in Pool A of the men's field hockey tournament.

Chris Ciriello scored two field goals in the first half while Rob Hammond, Trent Mitton, Simon Orchard and Des Abbott also scored.

In other men matches, England takes on Trinidad and Tobago, New Zealand meets South Africa and 2006 finalist Pakistan rounds off the day against Malaysia.

The women's matches are: Canada vs. England and India vs. Australia.
