New Delhi: Delhi Police on Wednesday claimed to have busted an inter-state counterfeit currency racket with the arrest of three persons and also recovered of Fake Indian currency notes (FICN) of face value more than Rs 2.5 lakh. Police said that Rs two lakhs FICN out of the recovered amount was packaged in a Bangladeshi newspaper named 'Pratham Alo,' hinting that the notes could have been smuggled from across the border.
One of the accused Ashok Mandal alias Bablu (31), who hails from Bhopura in Uttar Pradesh was arrested from Wazirabad road area after a trap was laid to nab him following a tip-off.
A red and black colour bag with two bundles of FICN in domination of Rs 500 was recovered from him, police said. During interrogation, Ashok revealed that he had procured the notes from one Manu Shaw of Nawada in Bihar for circulation in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR). Manu was apprehended with Rs 43,000 counterfeit currency and following his revelations the third arrest was made in the case on Tuesday.
"Manu disclosed that he provided counterfeit currency to one Javed of Delhi, following which he was arrested from Nawada yesterday," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ashok Chand, adding that Rs 16,600 of counterfeit currency was recovered from Javed. Manu further disclosed that he had procured the currency from his contacts in Malda, West Bengal who in turn procured the same from their contacts across the border, Chand said.
According to the police, Manu revealed that he procured the currency from his Malda-based contacts at 45 per cent of its value and further provided it to Ashok and Javed at 55 per cent of the value.
Police said, Ashok and Javed further revealed that after getting the FICN from Manu, they delivered it to their contacts in Delhi and NCR at 65 per cent of its value. Further investigation is in progress, police said.
