New Delhi: The sole witness to the horrific, barbaric gangrape and murderous assault on a 23-year-old woman on the night on December 16, 2012 holds the society responsible for the tragedy and says such incidents are crimes against the entire humanity. The brutal gangrape of a paramedical student by six men on a moving bus in the national capital saw massive protests with people braving water cannons and teargas shells brought the nation to a standstill.
"It is crime against society. The society was responsible for it. People should take responsibility and be try to bring in a change," said Avanindra Pandey, the friend of the Delhi gangrape braveheart, popularly called Nirbhaya.
Speaking exclusively to IBNLive, Pandey said, "It was very difficult to start the life again. It was due to the support of my family and friends that I was able to start my life again. No victim should take guilt, otherwise he/she won't be able to lead the life.
"I did whatever I could do. I was with the police for days during investigation. I was there during the court proceedings. I am still in touch with her family. I have no guilt," he said.
On the question of the case still in the Supreme Court, he said, "I am satisfied as a victim and complainant with the way the case is progressing. The police and court proceedings were fast. The law was changed after this incident. It may be delayed, but Nirbhaya will get justice."
During protest across the nation over the brutal gangrape, there were demands that rapists be stoned to death. But Pandey does not agree with such a punishment. "It will be inhuman, cruel. It will also set a wrong precedent for future cases."
He added, "The incident was the result of polluted mindset and upbringing. There is a need for awareness and there should be implementation of laws and schemes."
He did not even take the financial assistance given by the government. He said, "I am capable enough to lead my life."
He was returning with the woman to Dwarka after watching movie 'Life Of Pi' at Select Citywalk mall in Saket, Delhi, when they were lured by six people into a bus. After the duo entered the bus, the men began to harass the women which led to an altercation. The accused beat the 28-year-old male friend and then took turns to rape the woman.
The duo was thrown out of the bus after 30 minutes of torture. They are admitted to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital the same night. She was later shifted to Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore where she succumbed to her injuries after battling with them for 12 days on December 29, 2012.
