Delhi wholesale vegetable traders on strike, prices may rise
According to the traders, they will take to the streets and go on an indefinite strike if the new order was not taken back.

New Delhi: Delhiites may have to face shortage of vegetables and fruits, as well as a price rise, because wholesalers of fruits and vegetables are on strike from Monday. The strike has been called to protest against the government decision to withdraw their six per cent collecting commissions from the farmers and Delhi's biggest wholesale market at Azadpur has also been affected.

According to the wholesalers, earlier they used to procure six percent commission from the farmers. But now the Delhi government has stopped this and wants them to collect the commission from retailers.

Earlier, Delhi High Court had issued an order on October 2013, which directed agents to charge commission, not from the seller (farmers) but from the buyer. What the court order says is that instead of charging a six per cent from the farmer, the commission agent should take this from the wholesaler or retailer purchasing vegetables and fruits from him.

According to the Mahendra Sanpal, an office bearer at the Azadpur wholesale market, the traders will take to the streets and go on an indefinite strike if the new order was not taken back.

Meanwhile, the AAP government has blamed the BJP for the strike.
