Since the announcement of the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the evening of November 8, the common man is undoubtedly facing a lot of hardships.
Here is a look at the how various industries are reeling under the impact of note ban.
Agra, UP
- Leather footwear, petha, foundry industry
- Accounts for 35% of the total footwear exports & 65% of the domestic footwear market
- Close to 2 lakh daily labourers are out of work.
Tirupur, Tamil Nadu
- Textile sourcing hub with est rs 35,000 crore worth of textile products a year.
- About 1.5 lakh workers depend on some 2,000 small and micro units
- Around 60% of the powerlooms have shut down completely
Moradabad, UP
- City is known as pital nagri, ("brass city") for its famous brass handicrafts industry
- Est 100,000 artisans employed in the brassware work.
- Local traders have no cash left to make payments to artisans.
Ludhiana, Punjab
- Knitwear industry contributes about 80% of the total woolen/acrylic output of the economy; generates employment for over 400,000 people.
- More than 70% of the industries have reportedly shut down. Workers have migrated back to their homes and unemployment has increased
Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
- Castings & forging, powerloom &textile industries
- About 4 lakh people employed in these industries
- Many migrant workers not paid salary since demonetisation.
Surat, Gujarat
- Powerloom and diamond processing industries
- Home to 50,000 power loom units, another 40,000 units for value addition and about 400 dyeing units.
- About 10 lakh workers are directly or indirectly employed within the textile sector
- With the limit on withdrawal, workers are not paid on time
