BANGALORE: Geneticist Sir Walter Bodmer was in the city on Thursday to deliver a lecture on 50 years of human genetic study. Speaking at a two-day discussion titled ‘The Human Genome - Then and Now’ organised at the Centre for Human Genetics, he highlighted the progress of genetic studies over the years and explained how it has helped in the isolation and identification of various disorders. Also, he spoke about the immediate future of the human genome project which was mapped ten years ago,  and how it is changing the way patients are treated. The talk was delivered by Professor Dian Donnai, University of Manchester. Professor Shyam S Agarwal, Department of Immunology, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, spoke about various problems faced in the study of medical genetics in India and various steps to solve them. “We decided to have this discussion in order to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of the mapping of the Human Genome, as well as our moving into a new campus in Electronic City,” said Professor Sharat Chandra, director, Human Genetics. “We have many more talks lined up for Friday including a talk by Professor Stefano Semplici, chairperson of the International Bioethics Committee on Human Genome and Human Rights,” said Professor Chandra. On the second day, personal story of a parent will be featured along with social and cultural issues in genetic counselling and a talk on ethical issues in genetic research, delivered by former Chief Justice of Supreme Court M N Venkatachalaiah.
