In an incident that plunged an entire neighbourhood into grief, two brothers drowned in a lake near Avadi on Saturday afternoon, when they went in for a dip.
Babu (12) and Vinoth Kumar (7), sons of Eliza, a daily wage worker in Avadi, returned from their school on Saturday afternoon and headed straight to a nearby lake along with several of their friends, police said.
About an hour later, when they emerged from the lake after the swim, the group of boys realised that both Babu and Vinoth were missing.
They immediately informed some local residents about what happened.
However, even before help could arrive, Babu’s body was spotted floating in the lake, which police said was around 20 feet deep.
While Babu’s body was subsequently fished out, his parents informed police that even Vinoth was missing.
Later, fire and rescue personnel reached the spot and after a search, located Vinoth’s body too. A police case has been registered.
