KOCHI: Commuters to West Kochi will be in for a distressing day on Friday as the Kerala Motor Workers Union (TUCI) has announced a token bus strike in the area. The token strike will affect services to Fort Kochi, Mattanchery, Perumbadappu, Kumbalangi, Willingdon Island and Edakochi. The demands put forth by the organisers include proper operation of punching stations and regularisation in the time schedules provided to them.Protesters said that bus drivers compete on the roads only because bus owners force them to run late. “The drivers are willing to run the bus as per the Regional Transport Office’s time schedule. However, they are forced by the bus owners to delay the runs in order to get maximum number of passengers. When officially questioned, the owners blame the drivers. We demand regularity is brought into the operation of services in the area,” said Anil Kumar, Kochi region secretary of the union. He also pointed out that during peak hours, the endless traffic block at Pyari Junction in Thoppumpady is causing distress to commuters. “To sort out the issue, the road should be turned into a one-way from 8 am to 10 am and then from, 3 pm to 5 pm. The other vehicles can be re-routed through a side road during this time. We will be submitting a plea to the authorities concerned regarding this too,” Anil Kumar added.
