New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a contempt petition against the Uttar Pradesh government for suspending IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal. The petition filed by advocate ML Sharma said the IAS officer was suspended even after she followed the Supreme Court's orders.
Durga, in her reply to the chargesheet filed by the state government, had refuted all the allegations and said she followed apex court's order while demolishing the wall of a mosque. She had refuted allegations that her action could have sparked off communal tension, saying she had informed villagers on an earlier occasion as well about the illegality of the religious structure.
Durga had also stated in her reply that the mosque wall was demolished after full consultation with all religious leaders and various community leaders.
Nagpal, who led the crackdown on sand mining mafia in the district, was suspended ostensibly for ordering demolition of a wall of a under-construction mosque in Kadalpur village allegedly without following the due process.
The Supreme Court had earlier refused to entertain Sharma's PIL seeking reinstatement of suspended IAS officer, who had cracked down on illegal sand mining in Uttar Pradesh. The bench had said that it may entertain the petition if she (Nagpal) herself approaches the court.
The bench had further said that the officer can take care of herself and can also approach the other authorities including a court, against her suspension order.
