Elephant Day: Brisk jumbos enthral audience

Various activities arranged for elephants enthralled the gathering at the Elephant Day celebrations organised by Forest Department (Wildlife wing) at Sakrebailu camp in Tirthahalli taluk on Sunday.

The event was flagged off with a route march by elephants Kapila, Indira, Kaveri, Aale, Amrutha, Sagara, Geetha and Ganga which carried placards highlighting the significance of conservation of forest and environment. Later, a mock marriage revealing the importance of ‘Saptapadi’, an activity emphasising on oneness was exhibited by jumbos.

Amrutha, a mischievous elephant bagged first place in running race and Aale came second. Tussle between Sagar and Amrutha in the cricket match melted many hearts.

Sagar won the first place in backward running race. Football was played with team spirit. Dance by Amrutha lured the audience.

Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa said the Forest Department officials should organise Elephant Day celebrations in many venues in the city as it would attract a larger audience.

MP B Y Raghavendra said people should not invade into the habitat of wild animals. He stressed on the need to provide facilities like ensuring proper place to sit in the camp and arranging drinking water facilities.

MLA Kimmane Ratnakar said organising such programmes at the taluk-level would help children to understand their surrounding and animals in a better way. This would help in inculcating the significance of conserving wild life, the MLA added.

On the occasion, prizes were distributed to children who won in competitions organised by the Department as part of the wildlife week between October 1 to 6.
