SC directs universities and institutional authorities to implement the Lyngdoh Committee tips on college polls.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) accepted a report submitted by the Lyngdoh Committee on student union polls and on Friday directed university and institutional authorities to implement its recommendations.

The six-member Lyngdoh Committee, constituted to monitor student union polls in the country, had submitted its report to the SC in July.

In its report, the committee headed by former Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh, had suggested major reforms in the electoral exercise in colleges and universities.

It suggested that expenditure in student union elections should be limited to Rs 5,000.

It also recommended the keeping out of professional leaders from university and college campuses and fixed the upper age limit for contesting student union polls at 26 years.

According to the report, students with 75 per cent attendance and a good academic record should be eligible to contest the polls.

It has been recommended that no political parties or leaders should be directly involved in student union polls.

The Committee has also suggested the creation of a forum to address grievances and disputes arising out of the elections.

Secretary General of the Association of Indian Universities, Dayanand Dongaonkar, a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Zoya Hasan, Pratap Bhanu Mehta of the Centre for Policy Research, Director of the National Institute of Education, Planning and Management, Ved Prakash and a retired Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General, I P Singh, were the other members of the committee.
