CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the Tirunelveli Collector to ensure supply of all essential items such as food commodities and milk to the people in Radhapuram taluk, where Section 144 of the CrPC has been promulgated. Declining to suspend the prohibitive order, the first bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam gave the direction on Thursday while passing interim orders on a batch of public interest writ petitions alleging that the people of Radhapuram taluk had not been able to move freely and essential supplies such as water, milk and power had been denied and transport facilities had been cut off.Earlier, Advocate-General A Navaneethakrishnan submitted that the order had been passed on March 18 only as a preventive measure and it was a temporary order for about 15 days and that the people were not affected. It had been passed only to prevent the anti-social elements from entering the taluk for creating or instigating agitations against the functioning of the N-Plant at Koodankulam, he added. The Collector stated that the supply of milk, vegetables and water through tankers continued to the coastal village. He said the administration was ready to help the villagers in maintaining supply of essential commodities and was also ready to ply additional buses for the benefit of examination-writing students in Idinthakarai.Placing on record the submissions, the bench hoped that the statements would be effectively implemented so that the public of the area did not suffer for want of essential commodities/supplies.
