A retired army man shot dead a school owner in Lucknow on Wednesday and fired at a police team before surrendering, an official said.

Ex-serviceman Chandrabhan Singh, 55, shot dead Rakesh Kumar Singh, 27, owner of Gurukul School, in Adarsh Nagar neighbourhood in the Cantonment area over an issue suspected to be related to their old enmity, police said.

Singh shot the school owner in the head from his licensed rifle, police said.

After the killing, Singh hid himself in his house, fired shots at a police team which went to arrest him, and finally surrendered after a drama that lasted two hours, police said.

Circle Officer Babita Singh told IANS that investigators were greeted by hostile firing from the ex-army man. There was a mad scamper in the colony as Singh fired shots at police and people ran for cover, the officer said.

Reinforcements were rushed to the scene and police managed to make him surrender, Babita Singh said.
