Bangalore: The number of the complaints against engineering and medical colleges regarding excess fee demanded from students has shot up. The one man regulatory committee which oversees admission related problems in medical, dental and engineering colleges, has issued notices to 50 engineering colleges and 15 medical colleges for demanding excess fee from students who have been issued admission orders by Karnataka Examination Authority(KEA).
However, of the 50 engineering colleges, only three of them have replied to the committee in writing. Three weeks time has been given to the erring colleges to reply. Prof P Venkataramaiah, who heads the One Man Regulatory Committee said: “The colleges, which have responded are denying the fact that they have collected excess fee.
This is despite the Committee having concrete proof of the act. The committee has documented the receipts issued by the college, which clearly states that the institutions have taken excess fee from candidates.” The Chairman also pointed that some of the top city colleges like CMR Institute of Technology, Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering and East West College of Engineering to name a few were issued notices for demanding excess fee.
The committee, at present, is preparing an interim report on the irregularities and discrepancies during the admission process to the first year courses. Venkataramaiah said: “An annexure comprising names of the professional colleges which have been collecting fee under various categories like application fee, registration fee, sports, library and internet will be enlisted.” He also said that a meeting will be held where the matter of collection of excess fee will be discussed. The interim report will be submitted to the government after which action will be initiated against such colleges, he added.
