JEYPORE: Fertiliser shortage has affected growth of paddy crops in Koraput. This time, about 60,000 hectares (ha) including 43,000 ha of irrigated land under upper Kolab project were cultivated by over a lakh farmers of 14 blocks of the district. It was speculated that around 1.20 lakh tonne paddy would be produced. Though climate was conducive for good crop, lack of fertilisers like urea and potash has affected the crops, which are at flowering stage now.Farmers said they required around 50,000 tonnes of urea and 40,000 tonnes of potash since beginning of the crop cultivation. However, just 50 per cent of the total requirement has been supplied by the government agencies.“We did not get fertilisers in time and now the plants have become weak,” said S S Rao, Director of Pani Panchayats of Upper Kolab Project. He added that there would be 40 per cent crop loss due to fertiliser shortage.
