In a major verdict that throws light into the irregularities in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, the Ombudsman (MGNREGS), Ernakulam, has ordered to terminate an MGNREGS official at Kumbalangi panchayat from her post, following allegations of financial misappropriation.
Ombudsman K Chamthamarakshan issued the order on September 17 directing the Kumbalangi panchayat secretary to terminate Jainey Johny of ward no 12 from the post of mate, following a complaint lodged by Johnson of Kumbalangi.
The order was issued after it was found that Jainey helped two people - her husband Johny and another called Ajitha Premnath - to receive wages in connection with MGNREGS projects, though both of them had not worked in the project.
After going through the evidence deposed, the Ombudsman found that the contention by Jainey that “Johny and Ajitha had worked in MGNREGS projects carried out in ward no 12 of the panchayat during 2009-10 and 2010-11 cannot be accepted.” The duo received wages with the help of Jainey, the order said. In his order, the Ombudsman said that Jainey should remit the entire amount paid to Johny and Ajitha for the said work during the period, within one month to the MGNREGS fund. And if she fails to do so within the stipulated time, a complaint will be filed at the police station concerned against her for misappropriation of money.
The Ombudsman also directed the panchayat secretary, who is the programme officer of MGNREGS to send a report to the Ombudsman after the stipulated time regarding compliance of the order.
