On the occasion of Children’s day, Concern India Foundation in association with Antaranga Theatre is opening a Children’s production The Devils Tree based on a folk tale from Central India at Bal Bhavan. Sponsored by Titan Industries limited (Zoop), the play has been written, conceived and directed by well known theatre and film personality Padmavathi Rao. The play will continue to run through out November, December and January.Padmavathi Rao straddles the performing and fine arts, which includes theatre, filmmaking and painting. She started her career in feature films at the age of 15, with Girish Karnad in Ondanondu Kaladalli. She has been performing on stage in various Indian languages, including Kannada, Gujarati, Hindi, and English, working with IPTA, Mahendra Joshi, Shankar Nag, M S Sathyu, and Alyque Padamsee, as well as acting in television serials like Malgudi Days, Kayar, Professor Vasan and Faasle and feature films, like Subash Ghai’s Pardes. Padmavathi has worked as an assistant director and scriptwriter to some of India’s notable filmmakers, as well as on numerous international documentary and short feature projects, for the BBC and Channel Four. Amongst her notable assignments are Manas, Chelluvi and Kanoor ki Thakurani directed by Girish Karnad Her most recent directorial ventures include ‘The Diary of Balasaheb Shastri’ a television drama series and she co-directed Fishers Of Men a feature documentary. Padmavathi is presently embarking on a feature animation project that she has written titled Googli’s World. During her work in the performing arts, Padmavathi a self-taught artist has continually explored the world of colour through drawing, sketching and painting. Her body of work encompasses a range of mixed media, including pen and ink, water colour, pencil and even ball pen. It is an initiative by Concern India Foundation to revive folk tales, reinforce human values to children through tales in an entertaining manner. The play talks about reinforcing true friendship in the children’s lives. The production has a colourful combination of puppets , light and shadow besides powerful performances by professional actors. The funds raised through the play will go towards all children welfare projects. The play has already received tremendous response and appreciation from the children of noted schools of Bangalore like Delhi public school North and South, Mallya Aditi International School, National Academy For Learning, National Public Schools, Vidya Niketan School, Legacy International School to name a few.
