CHENNAI: Acrobats usually perform to slow and artistic music, but it’s too hot here to be artistic. So we use music as our scoring point by making it upbeat and catchy,” says Robert Keith, creative director, Action Rangers — an American Action Show that is on at VGP Universal Kingdom. The theme-based 25-minute acrobatics show is performed by a team of five professional acrobats from the US. “There isn’t much difference in terms of temperature between Texas and Chennai. So performing under extreme temperatures isn’t really a challenge,” adds Robert.The show traces the transformation of an ordinary juggler Jacob into one of the rangers. Dressed in bright greens, oranges and shiny silvers, the action rangers soon become superheroes.At a recent show at the Universal Kingdom, the audience kept cheering as the rangers performed some incredible gravity-defying stunts and showcased exceptional balancing skills. ‘Hand to hand’ by Rocco and Yan, Cyr wheel and Roller-bola stunt by Nick, cube-balancing act by Alyssa are the ones to watch out for. Jacob entertained the audience every now and then with his comic timing and impressive juggling skills.When asked for the reason for having named the show the way it is, Robert says, “We wanted a superhero-like name, something which stands for super strength and super power. And hence, it is Action Rangers.”It clearly takes a lot of hard work to be an acrobat. “The rangers wake up at 5.30 am and practice yoga every day. They also do an hour of stretching before every show,” says Robert. “Action Rangers is being modified a little every day.”“These shows cost us more than anyone can imagine. We pay each of them $500 every day. Then, the set has to be designed and the costumes have to be taken care of,” says VGP Ravidas, managing director, VGP group of companies.
