BANGALORE: A gang of miscreants posing as policemen duped three persons including two women of their gold ornaments in three separate incidents here on Friday.
In the first incident reported in Vijayanagar police station limits, Sheela (51), a resident of Amarajyothinagar, was duped of 170 grams of gold ornaments including three chains and two bangles.Sheela was walking on Nagarabhavi Main Road when two persons approached her and claimed that they were policemen. They allegedly told her that there was a murder in the vicinity and asked her to keep her jewellery inside her purse. After she kept her jewellery in her bag they took the bag on the pretext of safeguarding it. The duo were joined by another person and then they returned her purse and left the spot. The victim learnt she was duped only a few minutes after the miscreants had left, the police said.

Vijayanagar police are investigating the case.

'Theft Prone Area'

As she was walking near the bank, two men approached her and told her they were policemen and that the place was prone to robbery and thefts. As a precautionary measure they asked her to keep her jewellery inside her bag. They engaged her in a conversation and took her bag on the pretext of keeping it safe and then returned the bag before leaving the scene. After she reached home, she noticed that the jewellery was missing, the police explained.

In a third similar incident in Bharathinagar police station limits, Mahendra (40), a car driver and a resident of Frazer Town, was duped of his 12 grams of gold ornaments by two persons, who claimed that they were policemen.

As the men were wearing police shoes, the victim assumed they were policemen. Later, they told him that there was some law and order problem in the area and it was not safe to wear jewellery and asked him to keep his jewellery inside his bag. They took his two rings and a chain and pretended they were keeping it inside the bag. The victim left the spot and after a few minutes he checked the bag and realised he was cheated, the police said.
