KOCHI: The State Cabinet has sanctioned Rs 42 crore for constructing a bridge parallel to the Sree Sankara Bridge at Kalady along the Thiruvananthapuram-Angamaly state highway, said Port Minister K Babu. The amount has been sanctioned for construction of the bridge and acquisition of land for building the approach road. The topic was brought for discussion before the Cabinet by Works Minister V K Ibrahim Kunju. The Sree Sankara Bridge was constructed in 1963. The Works Department has proposed to construct a bridge with 7.50 metres width and 1.5 metres walkway, parallel to the existing bridge. The new bridge would be on the western side of the existing one. A team of panchayat officials led by Kalady panchayat president K B Sabu had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister in this connection. It was following this that a top-level meeting convened by a Chief Minister asked the Works Department Chief Engineer to file a detailed report in this regard.
