BHUBANESWAR: It was straight out of a Bollywood crime thriller. The dacoits enacted the loot with surgical precision, but the script went wrong midway. Reports said a gang barged into a businessman’s house in Jayadurga Nagar under Laxmi Sagar Police limits on Friday noon and terrorised the family members before two of them were captured in a dramatic fashion. The armed miscreants’ attempt to decamp with cash and gold jewellery was foiled by an alert neighbour who informed the Police Control Room. A team of police rushed to the spot and a film-style chase ensued in which two members of the gang were arrested. The rest managed to flee. The police claimed that the dacoits failed to take away the cash and ornaments which have been seized. Their identity has not been disclosed yet. The incident occurred at about 12.45 pm. Locals said a gang of seven arrived at the house of Nilkamal Bengani who deals in tiles. Since Bengani was away, his driver Lalit Rout answered the doors. The miscreants, who identified themselves as courier boys, forced their way into the house and when Rout offered resistance, he was severely beaten up and locked up inside a bathroom. While two of the men guarded the doors, the rest started terrorising Bengani’s wife Manju. She was hit with the butt of a pistol when Manju declined to hand over the keys of the chests to the drunk dacoits who spoke in Hindi. After she was threatened, she gave up and the five collected gold ornaments running into several lakhs of rupees and cash. It was during this period that Bengani’s neighbour Rashmi Ranjan Patnaik smelled a rat and called the Police Control Room. Four PCR vans and two high-powered bikes of Commissionerate Police rushed to the spot. With police arriving, the dacoits attempted to flee. Five of them managed to escape in a Scorpio but two could not. A chase ensued and one of them, brandishing a sharp weapon, tried to intimidate the police. Sarat Ray, a special police officer (SPO), chased one miscreant and captured him. The other was held by locals with help of the PCR van personnel. The cops seized gold ornaments and Rs. 2.5 lakh cash from the duo. Two teams have been constituted to track the rest.
