Water from Ganga river has crossed the warning level and is now just 35 cms below the danger mark, a senior official said on Tuesday. "On Tuesday at 9 AM, the Ganga river was flowing just 35 cms below the danger mark, which is 5 cms more than on Monday," District Magistrate (Finance) and nodal officer of rescue operations in Kanpur, S P Singh said.

Owing to the prevailing weather conditions and heavy rainfall forecast, Ganga river might cross the danger mark of 114 cms, which has become a cause of worry for the administration, he added.

The water level in Ganga has crossed 113 metre and reached till 113 metres 60 cm, while the danger mark is set at 114 metres. Due to heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning, the district administration has been alerted and and all steps have been taken to evacuate nearly 20,000 people living in 30 villages nearby, Singh said. If there is heavy rainfall, then the only alternative will be to shift these people from their villages to relief camps set up by the government.

Since the river Ganga has not crossed the danger mark, no one has been evacuated so far, he said, adding that an alert has been sounded in all the villagers that they can be asked to evacuate their villages any moment. District Magistrate Samir Verma is examining the villages himself. Since Monday, the Ganga river has risen by 5 cms, Verma said.

The district administration has made five 'Flood Chowkis' in which arrangements have been made for food, stay and medical treatment for the affected people, Singh said. Besides this, police and security personnel have been alerted in order to deal with any emergency situation, he added.
