CHENNAI: Garbage should be processed using new age technology in a shorter space, Municipal Administration and Rural Development Minister, KP Munusamy, told the officials after inspecting the Perungudi dumping ground on Wednesday.Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has ordered ministers and officials to improve sanitation in the state. Hence, a review of the overall sanitary situation is on. As part of the review, Munusamy and Environment Minister, TKM Chinnaiah, inspected the Perungudi and Pallikaranai dumping yards of the Chennai Corporation and Alandur Muncipality, respectively.Chennai Corporation Commissioner, D Karthikeyan, appraised the ministers about the way the litter was being handled. Garbage generated in the corporation areas were being brought to the Kodungaiyur and Perungudi dumping grounds. The Perungudi facility, spread over 200 acres, receives about 1,400 metric tons of garbage everyday, the Commissioner told the ministers.After inspecting the yard, Munusamy advised officials to use new technologies to effectively process garbage. “It is important to carry out the garbage processing activities at a shorter space to improve the garbage processing management,” he said.Minister Chinnaiah stressed the need to sensitise people on the issue of proper garbage disposal practices. “Better awareness is needed among the people. Segregation is important. The garbage should be segregated (biodegradable and non-biodegradable) properly and given to litter collectors,” said Chinnaiah.Issues in solid waste management, Chennai Corporation’s garbage processing schemes, setting up of sanitary litter land fills and the use of backhoe loaders and hydraulic escalators for effective handling of sanitary disposal were among the subjects that were discussed by the state ministers with Corporation commissioner Karthikeyan, besides other top officials.After reviewing the Perungudi yard, the ministers and officials inspected the 15-acre Pallikaranai landfill utilised by Alandur Municipality and the sprawling marshland. The ministers also inspected a 24-hour maternity hospital at Venkatarathinam Nagar in Adyar. They interacted with patients and evaluated the facilities that were available for them.Besides the ministers, Chitlapakkam Rajendran, MP, Sozhinganallur MLA Kandan, deputy commissioner (works) R Anandakumar, chief engineer K Vijayakumar, superintending engineer and (solid waste management) MS Premnath were present during the inspections.
