Govt condemns terror attack, announces compensation

New Delhi: Political leaders from various political parties including Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday expressed deep shock on the Ahmedabad serial blasts and condemned them as an act of desperation and cowardice aimed at disturbing peace and harmony in the country.

While condoling the death of innocent citizens, Gandhi appealed to the people to maintain peace.

Condemning the serial bomb blasts in Ahmedabad, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sanctioned an ex-gratia payment of Rs one lakh to the next of kin of those dead.

He also announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 for those injured in the blasts. He has expressed grief over the loss of lives and sent his condolences to the families of the bereaved, PM's Media Adviser Sanjaya Baru said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a Congress delegation will visit Ahmedabad on Sunday for an on-the-spot study of the situation. Led by AICC general secretary B K Hariprasad, the delegation will include party coordinator Rajiv Shukla, Abhishek Singhvi and AICC Minority department chairman Imran Kidwai, party sources said.

Terror struck the Gujarat capital on Saturday when 17 blasts ripped the city leaving 50 killed and at least 100 injured.
