Ahmedabad: To use or not to use plastics is a raging debate on Environment Day, and the Gujarat Science Society has added fuel to the fire by bringing out a pamphlet that pitches for plastics saying their use will help conserve more trees.
Senior scientist for the state government-run society, Dr Narottam Sahoo said, “Obviously, its fair to say ‘yes’ to plastic. Your ‘no’ will destroy some 10 million trees and we will have to depend on the forest.”
But the environmentalists are up in arms. They have rubbished the reasoning and point out that the same state government has allowed cutting down of hundreds of trees for development of special economic zones (SEZs).
“This is very foolish. The state has cut down lakhs of trees and mangroves to develop SEZ and is talking of saving trees now,” Director of Paryavaran Mitra, Mahesh Pandya said.
But the Gujarat Science Society is sticking to its guns, but concedes plastic must be disposed off in a proper manner. The society has even developed a model house made entirely of different types of plastic.
