A police official was left injured on Wednesday in the third terror attack in 48 hours in Jammu and Kashmir, as a gunfight began between security forces and militants in the Doda district. The cop has been hospitalised, even as the encounter is underway at the Kota Top of Gandoh Bhalessa town.
The injured security personnel was identified as special police officer Fareed Ahmed, who was injured in the initial exchange of fire between militants and the Indian Army’s 4RR along with J&K Police.
According to information received, forces have re-established contact with a group of militants in the upper reaches of Gandoh. The gunfight is taking place at an area 5 km from Jammu-Himachal Pradesh border. The police believe this is a group of three to four terrorists who are active in the higher reaches of this area.
Doda and Kishtwar were a stronghold of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and Jaish from 1994 to 2001. In 1994, when there was massive pressure on them in Kashmir, they opened a new front to relieve pressure. A similar strategy is evident in these attacks as well.
The first encounter took place late on Tuesday (June 11) when two terrorists, who opened fire in a village in Kathua, were killed. One CRPF jawan was also killed and a civilian injured in the subsequent gunfight.
The second encounter took place when terrorists in Doda fired upon an army base. They fired multiple rounds at the temporary operating base (TOB) in a remote area in Doda following which multiple teams of the army and police rushed to the spot.
