Hackers try their hand at State Information Commission portal

The Tamil Nadu State Information Commission website, that guides new RTI applicants and provides details of various orders, was recently found hacked. This was revealed by State Chief Information Commissioner K S Sripathi while addressing a seminar on Cyber Laws and Cyber Security here on Friday.

“Till last month it was proper and 10 or 15 days back, when we opened it, we found it was either taking us to unrelated pages or showing some junk or error. We found that someone had created a bug. It could also be a prank,” Sripathi said.

“When I clicked my name, it was taking me to an order passed by a commissioner who passed away two years back,” he added.

Though the security of the website was compromised, it has been set right, he added.

“It is a simple website and has no commercial value. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) has now set it right,” the CIC later told Express.

However, he said no complaint was filed with the police cyber crime cell as the hacking was on a “small level”.

The NIC, which is maintaining the site, is investigating, he said.

The CIC informed that the laborious process of replacing the content, including judgements and orders passed was in progress. “It might take two days,” Sripathi said.

The website provides assistance to new RTI applicants on the process of filing petitions apart from offering details of cases inquired and orders passed by the commission.
