BANGALORE: Regional Vocational Training Institute for Women is a training centre exclusively for women that offers various courses related to vocational training. The institute working under the aegis of Directorate General of Employment and Training, Ministry of Labour and employment announced its courses for the year 2011.The institute has basic skill courses on architectural draftsmanship, electronic mechanic, dress making and instrument mechanics. Above mentioned courses are only for candidates who have passed the SSLC. For those who have cleared the PUC examination, courses on offer include secretarial practice, fashion technology, computer operation and programming assistant and desktop publishing operator. With the special focus on skills and vocational training, the institute was set up in the year 1977. Different courses offered by the institute have been designed with the aim of promoting participation of women in skill training. Various courses have been designed and introduced under different schemes for the target group of young women with basic education of class X or XII. These courses are held every year to help women train themselves in vocational activities.“The institute aims at increasing women’s participation in economic and social development of the country by organising job-oriented vocational training programmes. We also provide training courses for women already employed in industry to improve their skills,” said S Vasanthi, principal, Regional Vocational Training Institute for Women.Vasanthi also informed that the institute also has few seats reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC), Schedule Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes(OBC). “Around 15 per cent of the seats are reserved for SC, 7.5 per cent for ST, 27 per cent for OBC, 3 per cent for physically handicapped and 10 seats have been kept reserved for the wards of defence personnel and ex-servicemen,” informed Vasanthi.Sujatha R S, a faculty in this firm said that students after completing their training from the institute are doing well. “Most of them have come up with their own business and doing really good. The courses offered have great potential for employment,” said Sujatha.“Although the institute is recognised by the Government of India and is imparting training to women at a very cheap rate, people are not aware about it,” said Vasanthi.
