BERHAMPUR: Berhampur Builders’ Association has protested the hike in benchmark valuation (registration) of lands coming under the Berhampur sub-registrar. In a letter to the Ganjam Collector, the BBA stated that as per the existing norms the fee for registration of lands should ideally be maximum 20 per cent.However, the valuation has been doubled for the areas under Berhampur sub-registrar, even when the other urban areas in the state follow the 20 per cent norm. This abrupt enhancement would create problems for people wishing to purchase homestead lands, as registration charges would exceed the land cost in several cases. Since no one will be ready to pay the registration charges more than the land cost, the possibility of underhand dealings cannot be ruled out, apprehended BBA. The Association has requested the collector to initiate measures to limit the benchmark valuation to 20 per cent.
