New York: Okay so officially this storm has kicked into a higher gear, in New York. We still have a few hours to go till the big moment -- 8-ish or so is when it's expected to hit. "The most severe part of the storm is now beginning," says Mayor Mike Bloomberg, addressing a news conference again at 5.45 Monday evening EST saying the time for evacuation and re-location is over, saying that he cannot emphasise enough that people need to stay indoors.
Just to give you a sense of the powerful gusts of wind -- there's some estimates that it's 50 miles per hour, possibly up to 90 according to some reports. The Mayor said there have been more than 1000 reports of tree damage in parks. A Jogger struck by a falling branch and hospitalised but is now better...someone else on twitter posted a picture of a tree falling hitting the cab they were in.
The Mayor has also said that ConEd (that supplies power) is going to shut down in parts of lower Manhattan, as a preventive measure. The manager of ConEd says already about 47 thousand people are out of power in New York... Some reports say nearly one million people are already without power, NJ and NY the worst. Earlier in the day, a crane snapped, which meant people in that area had to be evacuated...
Two thoughts I had in the meanwhile - the round-the-clock media coverage is a two-edged sword. It's information that is key, and especially so for those in the area, but I think it might also be adding to the fear and nerves, and feeding into a stressful sort of frenzy. I could be wrong.
